This is just my personal report.
I can't speak about UG, because I've not read him.
I stay with reading material that leaves me feeling grounded
and connected. Reading Advaita and Buddhism leaves me feeling confused - this after spending some years practicing Buddhism. I had some bad stuff happen
and what helped me was going outside of Buddhism and going back to my Western roots.
After many years of search around and getting confused and ripped off, my personal decision was
that my intellectual roots remain in the West, that is where I was acculturated.
In the West
we operate from concepts such as personhood, that personality is
real, and have the concept of inherant dignity of the ordinary human
person - that is where the concept of human rights originates
In the West our model is that we know we have just one life to
live, and that means justice in this lifetime is important.
This is very different from enlightement based religions where
some persons are regarded as more special than others, and that
rules applying to ordinary persons do not apply to them.
I've been through years of gaslighting. What helps me is
just staying with people and activities that make me
feel fellowship, connection, and that my behavior affects
other people's quality of life, not just my own.
Again, this is just my report. Each of us benefits from a different
recipe.
